What does an electrical permit cost in Calgary?
An electrical permit in Calgary is issued by the City, and its 2026 fee schedule prices a contractor's permit by the value of the work: a $112 processing fee plus $9.79 for every $1,000 of construction value, plus the Safety Codes Council fee. Here is who can apply, what the schedule charges, a few worked figures, and where each fee belongs in an electrical estimate.
- A certified electrical contractor applies before the work begins; the applicant needs an Alberta Master Electrician Certificate and a City of Calgary business licence.
- A contractor's permit is $112 plus $9.79 per $1,000 of construction value, plus a Safety Codes Council fee of 4% (minimum $4.50, maximum $560). The minimum total is $116.50.
- Construction value is the total value of the labour and material. A homeowner permit is $116.50.
- Work started before the permit is issued is charged double the permit fee.

Who applies for an electrical permit in Calgary
The City requires an electrical permit for "all electrical installations in any new or renovated buildings," and "Before the work begins, a certified electrical contractor must apply for the permit(s) and complete the work." The applicant must hold an Alberta Master Electrician Certificate, have a City of Calgary business licence and complete the City Qualified Trade application process.1 That matches the province-wide rule: master electricians are the only contractors who can obtain electrical permits in Alberta.2 On a new house, the single construction permit issued to the builder covers the electrical work it includes, and a separate electrical permit is needed for work outside it.1
A homeowner can take out a permit for their own home only as its legal owner, living in it or intending to, and the home cannot be a rental property; a homeowner cannot pull a permit on behalf of the person or company doing the work.3 The Safety Codes Act itself requires the appropriate permits before you construct.4
Calgary's 2026 electrical permit fees
The City's 2026 Building & Trade Permit Fee Schedule (R2026-02) lists these electrical lines:5
| Line in the 2026 schedule | Processing fee | Base fee | Safety Codes Council fee | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical trade permit | $112 | $9.79 per $1,000 of construction value | 4%, from $4.50 | varies, $116.50 minimum |
| Homeowner permit | — | $112 | $4.50 | $116.50 |
| Annual electrical permit | — | $156 | $6.24 | $162.24 |
| Re-inspection | — | $300 | $12 | $327, with $15 GST |
The schedule's notes set the rest. The Safety Codes Council fee is "4% of the permit fee, per transaction ($4.50 min, $560 max)." The permit fee is based on the total value of the labour and material. For new houses, semi-detached homes and duplexes, the electrical trade permit is included in the building permit fee. And "If an applicant begins work prior to receiving a permit, the applicant will be charged double the permit fee."5
Worked figures for a contractor's permit
At $9.79 per $1,000, the base fee scales with the job. Before the Safety Codes Council fee is added:
| Construction value (labour and material) | Processing fee + base fee |
|---|---|
| $10,000 | $112 + $97.90 = $209.90 |
| $40,000 | $112 + $391.60 = $503.60 |
| $150,000 | $112 + $1,468.50 = $1,580.50 |
The Safety Codes Council fee of 4% is added on top, between $4.50 and $560. The schedule points to the City's fee calculator for the exact total, which is worth running before you put the figure in a bid.
Where the permit belongs in a Calgary estimate
- The permit is yours. Price it on its own line from the schedule, so a change in scope moves it visibly. In VOLTA, enter it in Settings under Permits + mobilization and it prints on its own line on the quote.
- Price it from the whole scope. The fee follows the construction value of the electrical work, labour and material together, so take it from the finished estimate, not from the materials alone.
- Never start before it is issued. The schedule charges double the permit fee when work begins before the permit is received, and that comes straight out of your margin.
- On a new house, check what is already covered. The builder's single construction permit includes the electrical work it covers.
