Privacy policy
Plain language about what we keep, what we don't, and the one thing contractors ask first: your drawings never leave your device.
Effective September 28, 2026. Questions: info@voltaelectric.ca.
The short version
- Your drawings never leave your device. The estimator reads PDFs inside your browser. Nothing you upload is sent to us.
- We keep the minimum needed to run an account: your email address, your password (stored only as a one-way hash by our sign-in provider) and your subscription status.
- Card details go straight to Stripe. We never see or store full card numbers.
- We don't sell, rent or trade personal information, and we don't show ads.
- You can see, correct or delete what we hold about you by emailing info@voltaelectric.ca.
Who we are
VOLTA Electrical Estimating ("VOLTA", "we", "us") makes the estimating software at voltaelectric.ca. We are based in British Columbia, Canada. The person responsible for how we handle personal information can be reached at info@voltaelectric.ca. This page explains what we collect, why, where it is kept and what you can do about it. It applies to the website and to the estimator app.
What we collect, and why
Account
When you create an account we collect your email address and a password. The password is stored only as a one-way hash by our sign-in provider; we cannot read it. We also record when the account was created and last used. We use this to sign you in, to connect your subscription to you, and to send you messages about your account (password resets, billing changes, service notices). We do not use it for marketing unless you separately subscribe to the newsletter.
Billing
Payments are handled by Stripe. When you start a trial, Stripe collects your name, card details and billing address on its own secure pages. We receive back a customer reference, a subscription reference, the subscription status (for example trialing, active, cancelled) and the renewal date. That is all we store, and it is what the app checks when it decides whether to open for you. Stripe's own privacy notice covers how it handles your card.
Contact form
If you write to us through the contact page we collect your name, email address, an optional phone number, an optional rating and your message, so that we can reply. Submissions are stored by our hosting provider and forwarded to us by email.
Newsletter
If you choose to subscribe, your email address is added to our newsletter list, which is run by Mailchimp. Every issue carries an unsubscribe link and unsubscribing takes effect immediately. Subscribing is separate from having an account — one does not create the other.
Site usage
We use Google Analytics to understand which pages help and which do not. It records pages viewed, approximate location (city level, derived from your network address and then discarded), device and browser type, and how you arrived. We have turned off advertising features and cross-device signals, so it is not used to build an advertising profile of you. You can switch it off for this browser with the button below.
Server logs
Like every website, our hosting provider keeps short-lived technical logs — network address, time, page requested, browser type — to keep the site running and to detect abuse.
Your estimating data stays on your device
This is the part that matters most to contractors, so here it is plainly. When you open a drawing set in the estimator, your browser reads the PDF locally. The extracted text is held in your browser's memory while you work and is not written anywhere by us. Your project — quantities, rates, your company details, client and site names you type in — is saved in your browser's own storage on that device so it is there the next time you open the app. It is never uploaded to us and we have no way to see it.
Two consequences follow. First, we cannot recover it for you: if you clear your browser data or change computers, the project is gone unless you saved a project file (Settings → Save project file). Second, you can wipe it yourself at any time from Settings → Erase all VOLTA data on this device, which removes every project, setting and company detail the app has stored in that browser. Project files you save are ordinary files that you control.
Where information is kept
We run VOLTA on established service providers rather than our own servers: Supabase (accounts and sign-in), Stripe (payments), Netlify (website hosting and the contact form), Google (analytics) and Mailchimp (newsletter). Some of these providers store information outside Canada, including in the United States, where it may be accessible to authorities under the laws of that country. Each provider is bound by its own privacy commitments and we only share what each one needs to do its job.
How long we keep it
- Account and subscription records — for as long as your account exists. If you ask us to delete your account, we remove it from our sign-in provider. Stripe keeps payment records for as long as financial and tax rules require.
- Contact form messages — up to 24 months, so we can follow up on a support thread.
- Newsletter address — until you unsubscribe.
- Analytics — visit-level data is kept for up to 14 months; after that only aggregated totals remain. We do not try to identify individuals from it.
- Server logs — a few weeks, on our hosting provider's normal schedule.
Sharing
We share personal information only with the service providers named above, to run the service; when you ask us to; or when the law requires it (for example a court order). We never sell or rent it, and we do not share it with advertisers.
Cookies and storage in your browser
The site and app store a few small items in your browser: your sign-in session, your language choice (English or French), a flag that says you have already seen the welcome message, and — in the estimator — your saved project and settings as described above. None of these are used to track you across other websites.
Google Analytics sets its own cookies to tell repeat visits apart. You can turn analytics off for this browser here; the choice is remembered in this browser only, and applies immediately.
Browser privacy settings, content blockers and private windows also work as you would expect.
Your choices
- See or correct what we hold. Email info@voltaelectric.ca from the address on your account. We will reply within 30 days and may ask you to confirm it is really you.
- Delete your account. Email us and we will remove it. Cancel any active subscription first from Your account & billing so you are not charged again.
- Stop the newsletter. Use the unsubscribe link in any issue.
- Turn off analytics. Use the button above.
- Complain. Tell us first and we will try to put it right. You can also contact the privacy regulator for your province or territory.
Security
Everything travels over encrypted connections. Passwords are hashed by our sign-in provider and card numbers never touch our systems. Access to account records is limited to the people who run VOLTA and is protected by the providers' own access controls. No system is perfect; if we ever discover a breach that creates a real risk of harm to you, we will tell you and the appropriate authorities as required.
Not for children
VOLTA is a business tool for contractors and estimators. It is not directed to minors and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes to this page
If we change how we handle personal information we will update this page and the effective date at the top. For changes that matter, we will email account holders before they take effect.
