What software do electrical estimators use?

Which one a shop actually uses tracks almost entirely with how many tenders it prices a year and whether it employs a full-time estimator.

Dedicated electrical estimating suites

These are the tools built for this trade and nothing else: Trimble Accubid (Classic and Anywhere), ConEst IntelliBid, McCormick, and Vision InfoSoft’s Electrical Bid Manager. They pair a very large priced item and assembly database with a takeoff surface, a labour unit library and a bid summary sheet, and they are what most estimators at mid-size and large electrical contractors use daily.

Database depth is the real product. McCormick’s own 2026 guide cites more than 55,000 items and 25,000 assemblies shipping in the box, and describes ConEst as an IntelliBid plus SureCount pairing and Electrical Bid Manager as a tool commonly paired with a separate takeoff package. That depth is why a large shop can price a hospital branch without building its own catalogue — and it is exactly what a two-person shop rarely needs.

The trade-off is cost and ramp-up. None of these vendors publishes list pricing; third-party directories such as ITQlick carry figures that contradict each other, which tells you how reported this category’s pricing is. Budget the training days as part of the price (the real cost of estimating software).

General takeoff and measurement tools

Bluebeam Revu, PlanSwift, ConstructConnect’s On-Screen Takeoff, STACK and Countfire are trade-agnostic: you measure, count and mark up PDF drawings, and the quantities come out. Countfire and STACK lean toward symbol counting; Bluebeam is as much a document and markup tool as a takeoff one, which is why it is on almost every estimator’s machine whatever else they run.

These tools count and measure; they do not price. A shop using one of them still needs somewhere to apply labour units and material costs — usually a spreadsheet, sometimes a suite. That two-step workflow is normal and it is also where transcription errors live.

Estimating inside a larger contractor platform

If a shop already runs a project management or field service platform, the estimating module usually comes from there. Procore acquired Esticom on 27 October 2020 and folded it in as Procore Estimating, so general contractors and subs already on Procore often price inside it. ServiceTitan and similar field service systems sell quoting aimed at service and residential work rather than hard-bid tender.

The appeal is one system and one data set. The limit is trade depth: a platform module is built to be adequate for many trades, which is different from being built for electrical. If your work is service calls and small residential, that is often fine; if it is spec-driven commercial tender, it usually is not (service calls vs. projects).

AI-assisted takeoff tools

The newest category drafts quantities from the drawings automatically and asks a human to review them. Approaches differ sharply: some tools recognise symbols, some measure geometry, and some — VOLTA included — mine the drawing text for project facts and apply parametric rules to draft quantities across divisions. They are not the same thing, and “AI-powered” on a brochure tells you nothing about which one you are buying (AI takeoff, explained).

What every credible tool in this category shares is the posture: the AI produces a draft, the contractor reviews it, the contractor decides. Ask what exactly is drafted, what is measured versus allowed, and where the review happens before you take a number seriously.

Excel, still

Spreadsheets remain the most widely used estimating tool in small electrical contracting, and it is worth being honest about why: the sheet matches how the owner already thinks, it costs nothing extra, and nobody has to be trained. For a shop pricing a handful of small jobs a month it is a defensible choice.

It stops being defensible at the point where the sheet becomes a liability: no audit trail on formula changes, labour units frozen at whatever year they were typed, and a takeoff that lives in your head rather than in the file. Those failures show up on the biggest bid, not the smallest (Excel template vs. software).
